Thread: Poor FPS issues

  1. #1

    Question Poor FPS issues

I run Keyclone, I know how to use it thoroughly so I know how to set the min/max fps settings.

I"m trying to troubleshoot FPS problems and I've gotten to the point where I'm running a single WoW app and in Dalaran I get 24fps with all MIN settings @ 1024x768. Now its not a hardware issue cause I have this brand new Alienware M15X I just bought, I've troubleshot all the problems with throttling in other games and the only problem left is in WoW.

24fps in Dalaran for a 260GTX video card is just piss poor, and the problems are only in WoW.

I did notice a post about setting your background and Max fps settings back to default... but that didnt rectify the situation.
I tried "/console maxfps 0" or something to that effect and it was not a verbose command, nor did anything change.

    Anyone else have this issue?

Dalaran is much worse graphics then just about anywhere.

There are so many really beautiful buildings (read: high polygon count objects).
And unlike the other cities, you have a lot of things not blocked off from your view.
So you have to render a ton of these objects all at once.
Combine this with all the armor textures, from all of the players.

Well, it is the most strain on your system of any zone blizzard has made to date.

I'm running a fairly strong system.
And in places in Dalaran I get 30 FPS tops.

Zanthor has a thread, where he built an absolutely killer system for a friend, with similar FPS in Dal.

Out of curiosity, how are your FPS in a more typical zone or inside an instance?
I'd imagine that will give a better assessment of your systems strength.
If your system struggles in other zones, then maybe worry about it a bit.
If you get the FPS issues in Dalaran, and server thrashing in Wintergrasp, but are decent elsewhere... then it is the game, and not your system.

I tried something that many folks have suggested here. Trying panning the camera down and looking at the ground, your FPS should go up. I got mine to something like 45, but when I pan up, it goes to 23-30. Most other areas I can 60-90 FPS (I unchecked Vert Sync).

Thanks for the help guys, it was really a last ditch effort to keep the system, but I sent it back to Alienware. I found out the issue has to do with the Core i7 Mobile chip.

Essentially the i7 Mobile has 4 cores and 4 virtual totaling 8.
However the chip is marketed as 1.7ghz with turbo boost to 3.0ghz.
What this means is the chip is designed to conserve power since its a mobile device, so when utilizing all 8 threads each thread will operate at 1.7ghz. But when utilizing one core, it will boost to 3.0ghz. The chip simply wouldnt have the power supply necessary for it to provide 3.0ghz to all 8 threads.

For multiboxing on a laptop, stick to the Core2 Duo or Core2 Quad, i7M is crap.

    Just my two cents.
