Musings of a Multiboxing Noob

Here goes nothing...

This is going to be a different sort of blog than the others on here because, well, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to anything about multiboxing. Join me on my journey as I learn about the world of multiboxing. You other noobs might be able to relate to my musings, and those who are experienced multiboxers can have a good laugh at my expense.

Let me start with a little bit of background information. Although I've never really multiboxed before, I'm not entirely new to MMORPGs. I grew up playing text-based games like Tele-Arena and MajorMUD. At some point, I graduated to graphical MMORPGs, mainly Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft. My WoW experience only lasted a few months, around the time that Burning Crusade was released. I went through some life changes in 2008 and ultimately ended up leaving WoW behind and going back to text-based games. I started playing a MUD called Dragon Swords, I and eventually got suckered into being one of the people who run it, which is what I've been doing for a couple of years now.

Well, now I've found myself back in the land of games with graphics! And I feel completely lost. Multiboxing? I never knew what it was until 2 weeks ago. That might surprise you, considering I should have at least known about ISBoxer. Well, I did know about it to some degree, but I didn't really fully understand what it was until recently. I had heard Lax talk about it, but it was an abstract concept to me. Luckily, what I'm helping Lax with doesn't require any sort of multiboxing expertise. Still, I wanted to learn about this community and multiboxing itself so that I didn't feel like a complete noob.

I started browsing through the forums on here and on ISBoxer.com. I hid in the corner of the ISBoxer chat room and quietly observed. Holy cow. I was a little overwhelmed! What the heck were all these terms that people were throwing around? Key maps? Mouse broadcasting? Not to mention a zillion software-specific and computer-specific technical terms. People might as well have been speaking a foreign language. I was also starting to discover just how crazy multiboxers are... Some play 40+ characters at a time?! They use multiple computers to game with?! There's such a thing as VERTICAL monitors?! I was wondering what I got myself into.

Over the next week or so, I started scouring the forums, scanning through the ISBoxer wiki pages, and watching the awesome videos made by MiRai and Lax. Slowly, bits and pieces started coming together and making more sense. I decided to bite the bullet and give ISBoxer a try. I'll save that experience for my next blog entry.

The major thing, I love about this community, is the willingness to help each other out.

The other is the sense of humor a lot of people have here. So, never be afraid to ask a question, or for advice on anything that goes on here, I still do it myself, while others here have probably forgot more then I will ever know.
